The top 5 trendy spots on the island of Ré

The Île de Ré is a beautiful place that evokes vacations, fine sandy beaches, camping and the sweetness of life. It is a must-see destination for water sports enthusiasts. If you want to surf on the Ile de Ré, we have selected for you the 5 favorite spots to discover during your vacation.

The Grenettes spot - the surfers' rendezvous

The Grenettes beach, located west of Sainte-Marie-de-Ré is without hesitation the most frequented spot on the Island. In this part of the island, the coastline forms small cliffs that overhang a thin beach. Due to the geographical conditions, the best waves appear when the wind blows from the north-east. This place is perfect for beginners, as the waves are low and suitable for everyone. It is also known for its accessibility, its regularity and its rocky waves. Even if this spot is suitable for beginners, be careful if you lack control. In summer, the beach is very crowded and you may hit a bather. Wearing small water shoes, with a rubber sole is also recommended to protect your feet from submerged rocks.

The Grignon spot - the spot for thrill-seekers

Grignon is a surf spot located in the commune of Ars-en-Ré, on the south coast in the west of the island. It is in the list of the trendy spots which will delight the lovers of strong sensation. It is true that in this area, surfing is only possible at high tide. At low tide, surfing is totally forbidden because of the rocks that cover the bottom. However, it should be noted that the Grignon is exposed to the swell and the tide is high most of the time. You can therefore surf at any time. When in doubt, do not hesitate to consult the experts' opinions to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Grouin Beach - less crowded but great for summer surfing

Grouin beach is located at the end of the Loix peninsula. Between marsh and ocean, this wild and little frequented beach offers a beautiful view of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Not only that, it is the ideal place for sunbathing, swimming and surfing.  If you're looking for a less crowded place to surf in peace in summer, choose the Grouin spot.

The Gouillaud spot - the right spot for paddleboarding

The Gouillaud spot is one of the most popular surf spots for locals on the Ile de Ré. Throughout the year, this beautiful spot welcomes you with its quality waves, so that you can fully enjoy your camping vacations on this island. The beach of Gouillaud is located west of Bois-Plage-en-Ré. It is characterized by its low-powered waves, of rocky reef type. This spot is considered as the best for paddle or sea kayak. It can also be used as a bodyboarding spot. If you want to surf there, be aware that it is only practicable at high tide. Before you go, don't forget to check the tide schedule of the island as well as the tidal coefficient. These two data will allow you to know if the spot is accessible or not. If the spot is accessible, watch out for flat rocks on the bottom. If so, you have nothing to fear, because not far from there is the spot Gros Jonc.

The technical spots at Lizay, Petit Bec and Diamond Head

The Lizay, Petit Bec and Diamond Head spots are a true paradise for thrill seekers. This trio of beaches is located between the Conche des Baleines and the Lizay point. They are surrounded by a forest of wild pines. Little frequented, even during the summer vacations, these three spots are the meeting place of surfers and surfing fans. The waves are very powerful and fast. They can reach up to three meters high. This is actually why these spots are not recommended for beginners.  To conclude, it should be noted that the island of Ré is home to many surf schools. They offer fun and friendly lessons for all levels. If you want to take advantage of your stay at the campsite Le Suroit to learn to surf, the experts of these schools are at your disposal.
